Volunteer FAQ
What are the qualifications to fight fires?
Those interested in fighting fires need to meet certain medical and physical requirements and be willing to complete a Firefighter I course and receive a NJ Division of Fire Safety Firefighter I Certification that includes Hazardous Material Awareness and Operations. Once initial training is completed, members are ready to respond to a variety of emergencies and employ the use of many pieces of high-tech equipment to control hazardous situations.
What if I don’t want to fight fires, but help in other ways?
Volunteers are needed to fight fires, but we are also in need of fire police to assist at scenes as well as junior members and RCBC students.
How do I sign up?
Fill out an inquiry form on our Contact Us page, and our membership committee will be in touch with you shortly.
When does the department train?
Moorestown Fire Department is committed to providing our volunteers with comprehensive, high-quality training. Our volunteers train on Thursdays, from 7 to 9 p.m. The two stations typically hold training sessions separately, but come together once or twice a month for department-wide training. Our department will occasionally train with other departments from nearby communities.
What are some benefits to volunteering?
The response and leadership skills attained as a volunteer firefighter can one day lead to a career in firefighting (it also looks great on a resume!). Volunteering is a great way to give back to the Moorestown community by joining a team ready to help its neighbors in need. Many of our volunteers say that serving their community and helping others has been a highly-rewarding experience.
What is unique about the Moorestown Fire Department?
Volunteer firefighters in Moorestown respond to calls throughout the township, which is made up of buildings new and old, small and large. Moorestown may only be 15.2 square miles, but our department covers a community with a full spectrum of buildings: the township’s historical downtown Main Street, the Moorestown Mall, industrial facilities, Victorian homes, mid-rise apartments, or new construction. As a result, a wide variety of expertise operating specialized equipment and apparatus is required.
Our department is made up of people from all walks of life and consists of a wide range of ages. We are: a mortgage loan officer, a PSE&G gas division worker, a zoning officer, a lawyer, a custodial supervisor, a police officer, an army nurse, an electrician, a corporate banker, a mechanic/tire specialist, a realtor, and students.
